Stressed at Work? 4 Ways to Better Cope with Stress in the Workplace

Stress in the workplace is inevitable. Even for those of us who have professions that we love, we find ourselves constantly involved in never ending piles of work. Plus, if our stress doesn’t exactly derive directly from our jobs, we still have whole lives outside of the workplace that ensure that we have stress in our lives.

Just because stress is inevitable doesn’t mean that you have to allow it to take over your life though. Managing your stress levels is crucial to maintaining good health—both physical health and mental health. This article offers four simple things you can do at work to lessen your stress levels.

1. Take a better break than usual.
You receive breaks at work for a reason—take them. Do not eat your lunch at your desk while continuing to work and don’t make yourself available for meetings on your lunch break. Instead, why not take a walk or have a picnic at a park  near your job?

2. Call the 24/7 emergency counselor that your HR representative keeps telling you about.
Each year too many people make rash life-changing decisions which could have been avoided if they’d just reached out to someone. If you’re feeling like your stress levels are beyond what you can handle on your own, don’t be afraid to reach out for help.

3. Exercise!
Not only is exercise good for your body, it’s good for your mind as well. When we exercise we release endorphins which relax us. Sure, exercising won’t fix your problems (unless your stress stems from the need to lose weight), but it does provide a nice little getaway.

4. Be involved in extracurricular activities outside of work.
I know what you’re thinking: “I don’t want to volunteer to save the rainforest after work. I just want to go home and veg out in my pajamas.” Extracurricular activities however, aren’t limited to volunteering to saving some being or thing. Why not change your life a little and set aside a few hours each week dedicated just to chatting at a coffee house with a couple of your friends or coworkers after work hours? If this isn’t a habit of yours already, you could be the first one in the office to implement something like Taco Tuesday or Salsa Dancing Wednesday.
